Straight Razor vs. Safety Razor

With the come back of straight razors we have a new battle going on which is between safety and straight razors. both of them come with their own sets of pros and cons, in this article we are going to discuss both of them without any pinch of biasedness though the choice depends on the needs and the nature of the person using the razor, both straight and safety razors are good at their own places.

I don’t think there is anyone who has not come across straight and safety razors even once as both of them got popular in the last centuries.

Straight Razors, the name itself tells about what it looks like, a long blade which is of course straight attached n a handle now some come with wood handle and some with plastic straight razors are famous with the name “cutthroat” or “barber’s Razor”

Straight razors are the first one to step in the world of shaving and later came safety razors, straight razors can also be identified as a knife as they somewhat look similar.

Pros of Straight razors

The best thing about straight razors is that they last long which simply means you have to invest just once though like the every other machine they need to be maintained like re-sharpening the blade every eighth month and it gives you one of the best shaves that’s the reason barbers still use them and the reason behind their comeback.

Cons

Now shaving with straight razors need patience, practice, and experience. if you are new with straight razors then you must be ready to have some cuts.

If anyhow it gets damaged it needs to be replaced there is no other way.

coming to maintaining it, if you don’t have the skills you can’t re-sharpen it and it needs to be reshaped every 8th month and this process takes a lot of time.

  2. Thiers-Issard6/8″ Straight Razor

Saftey Razors

Pros-

The name itself tells you its benefit, its safe to use, you don’t need the same amount of practice that you need with straight razors and replacing the blades is damn too easy, in some cases it’s cheaper too, good for men who are always in a hurry.

Cons

The only con that I see is that you need to keep buying blades as one lasts only for 3-4 shaves whereas straight razors are like a one-time investment and straight razors even give a better shave than safety razors.

Verdict

The ones who love grooming themselves and are patient must go for Straight razors and the ones who are impatient and always in a hurry must go for safety razors. now the choice depends totally on you, you can try both of these there is no harm in trying after trying you can actually be sure about which one is the one for you and you will get to know the difference in the shave results as well.

How to shave using a straight razor?

Before tell you how shave with a straight razor is done I m going to answer some other common questions related to straight razor

What is a straight Razor?

It is basically a handle with a huge blade which is at times knows as barber’s Razor and even cutthroat, though cutthroat sounds little scary it is not, all you need to do is be careful you will need to sharpen it once in a while.

Why is it making a comeback?

It helps you to cut down a lot of waste, how? once you buy it you do not need to buy cartridge razors, you can only use cartridge razors for 4-5 times and after that, they do not work whereas straight razor they are back to stay. Helps you save money, it is a one-time investment as it would last longer then you would expect it to.

Straight Vs. Safety

Straight razors are not for the ones who are always late as people who are always late stay in a hurry, they need to look good and in the same time need to catch a train to reach on time, straight razors require practice, time and patience whereas safety razors can be used by anyone they don’t make you feel special about yourself they just give you an ordinary shave but are best for impatient people as there are fewer chances of getting a cut but as straight razors are making a comeback in the shaving industry there is a reason, the reason is the result you get after shaving with a straight razor and it is even more of an adventure, and people who love smooth shave still go to barbers to get their shave done with straight razors

How to shave using a straight razor?

There are 3 steps for an amazing shave

  1. Stropping

heard about stropping? when shaving with a straight razor it is very important it needs to be done before each shave as it helps you keep your cutthroat razor straight. you need to horizontally rub the blade on the leather and make sure while doing this the sharp side of the blade is facing you.

  1. The need to prepare your face

if you want your shave to be painless then you must take bath with warm water as it helps in opening your pores and after this, you need to massage your face with some shaving cream, do not let your skin get dry.

  1. TheArt of using your razor

you need to hold your straight razor in your dominating hand, the place for your thumb is under the shank and it would appear as if it is against the shoulder of the razor whereas your ring, index, and middle fingers are supposed to be on the opposite side and your little finger is supposed to be on the tang.

now that you know about the position make sure when you shave you keep your skin tight, to avoid getting any cuts make sure you shave at a 30-degree angle, the direction of your hair growth needs to be the direction of your blade while shaving keep one thing in your mind do not put a lot of pressure.
